France arrests hundreds of protesters in “Block Everything” demonstration
The Interior Ministry noted that 549 individuals were placed in police custody after overnight clashes stretching into Thursday. Paris Police Chief Laurent Nunez confirmed additional arrests following unrest in the capital, particularly around Place des Fêtes. “This morning we have 280 arrests, including a large number of people in police custody,” he told reporters, adding that 164 people were still being held.
Nunez dismissed the movement as “a failure,” stressing that protesters failed to mount effective blockades despite “numerous, numerous attempts.” He pointed to roughly 10 unsuccessful efforts to obstruct the Paris ring road, an aborted attempt to storm Gare du Nord train station, and scattered disturbances at schools and bus depots.
Senate President Gerard Larcher echoed the same assessment, also calling the protests “a failure.”
Smaller actions persisted on Thursday, with demonstrators trying to block sites in Nantes and at Sciences Po in Paris, where police intervened to reopen access.
Authorities pledged to remain firm, with Nunez vowing to maintain “the same determination, the same vigilance, the same doctrine” in preventing further blockades in the coming weeks.
Labor unions have already announced another round of nationwide demonstrations on September 18, with a march planned in Paris. The route has yet to be finalized pending police approval.
